Saturday Ink

 

Sorry to disapoint you kittens, but this weeks feature is postponed to next week. The feature blogger for today, Katelyn, JUST got some work done...and it is still pretty fresh. Her ink is doing that funky peeling lizzard thing so rather then rush it I suggested she wait until she was more comfortable and ready to show of her ink. And trust me, this piece is SO ADORABLE it is worth the wait!

Speaking of adorable, here is a picture of Katelyn. Ain't she the cutest?

Saturday Ink: Pixie Polly

Hello my lovelies! Welcome back. I noticed that I recently got a wave of new readers and I am so happy you are all leaving comments and introducing yourselves! I love getting to know you all. In case you just started following, Saturday's are all about ink over here on Searching for Serendipity. And today I have a particularly lovely lady to intoduce you all too: Polly of Pixie Mama! Polly is a crafty, tattooed, blogging, mommy of 3 living in North Wales. Lets get to know her a bit better shall we?

1) How Many tattoos do you have and what are they of? 

Currently I have 14 tattoos. I have 4 birds - 2 on my chest and 2 on my back, a giraffe, a Little Mermaid inspired fairy, a manga-esq girl, a sun, 2 characters from Tim Burtons 'The Melancholy Tale of Oyster Boy' book - Pin Cushion Queen and Voodoo Girl, a rose and dagger (one of the first I had done and will be covered up one day!) ,a geisha girl, the RHCP symbol and a woman resting against a tree on my back.


2) Where did you get them done, who was the tattoo artists?

The rose and dagger, along with 2 other tattoos that have since been covered up were done at the Blue Banana in Lincoln, UK about 12 years ago. I can't remember the guys name for the life of me! Everything else has been done in the last 4 years, by our friend Sean here in Wrexham.

3) Did you enjoy the process?

I love getting tatooed! Really, after the initial minute of adjustment when the needle first touches skin, I love it. I zone out, the whirring of the tattoo gun soothes me. I love the whole process and once a session is finished I'm itching to get on with the next!

 

That said - the tattoo that is on my lower back of a woman against a tree was the worst experience I've had. I wasn't pysched up for any pain from it, and the second the needle hit my skin, the nerves in my back twitched and I jumped. After that I was so scared of jumping again and the needle drawing a line right across my back that I was hugging the chair so hard I had friction burn on my arms! Those 2 hours were some of the worst of my life! Hence why the tattoo hasn't been coloured in yet!

4) Why did you get your tattoos? What stories do they tell, what do they represent to you?

The first 3 tattoos I got (rose and dagger, a chinese symbol and a dragon) were impulse tattoos - not really thought out, and they had no special meaning. That is why 2 have already been covered up and the last one will be soon!!

I have 4 birds (so far....) because I am crazy about birds! I love the idea of being able to fly away, looking down on the world. A romantic notion of freedom... they inspire me to spread my wings and not be stuck in one place. The lady on my back represents my love of nature and my inner hippie-ness. The various tattoos on my arms are simply picutres that I love deeply... tattoos to me that tell of a moment in my life. I can see me looking back when I am old and grey and seeing memories in my tattoos. The RHCP symbol on my wrist I got with my husband to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

5) do you want to get more?

Most certainly! I have a folder full of ideas on my computer, and many sketches too! I want some more birds, and owls and a russian doll. But first I want to finish the Geisha girl on my arm, colour her in and add some detail behind to fill the space!

Saturday Ink: Family Love

Welcome to another round of Saturday Ink! Today's featured blogger is Kimmi, I hope you will all give her lots of inky-love and of course head over and check out her blog and Etsy shop. Kimmi has a few tattoos, but has choosed to highlight one very dear to her heart with us:

Why is this tattoo special to you? I am a part of the Paiute Indian Tribe. I hold the Native American ways close to my heart. My grandfather passed away when I was 16. This was the first time a really close relative passed away, he suffered a severe heart attack. My grandmother found him next to their front door trying to get outside. Ever since then, I have thought of my grandfather as a bird, trying to be set free. Now whenever I see a black crow watching me, I think it is my grandfather checking in on me.So moving forward, I will get a feather tattoo for a passing relative, each one will be different with their personality.

Who did your ink? My friend Mike Williams did it, we met him in Dallas when he did my boyfriends tattoo. Since then, he has done 2 of my tattoos and I won't let anyone in the area do my ink but him. He is currently in Austin, TX.

Do you want more? Yes, I think anyone who gets tattoos wants more, they are very addicting. I want to do half sleeves on both arms and maybe my chest. My corporate job keeps me from really doing that right now.  I have 3 in total. The feather, a set of stars on my back and a kanji tattoo on my left foot that reads "chicken" (my boyfriends nickname for me).

What do you like best about tattoos? It is like having wearable art. Each of them has a story and something that the person holds close to their heart.\

Saturday Ink: Punk Rawk Purl

Where did you get your ink done? I have been tattooed by 3 different artists over the last 20 years. (dear god that makes me sound old!) Most of my work was done by Chris Conn who retired from the tattoo industry about 5 years ago. My most recent work was done by Jason McAfee at Freddy Corbin's Temple Tattoo in Downtown Oakland CA.

What got you into tattoos to begin with? When I was a kiddo my favorite Uncle was heavily tattooed. He was a cool guy with a successful life, a role model to his family & career... not what people thought of when they pictured the "Tattooed Man". I grew up always knowing that I too wanted to have a whole bunch of tattoos, they looked really cool, & they carried stories & memories.

 Do your tattoos have any stories attached to them? I got my first tattoo(s), 20 years ago. They are on the inside of my right forearm, a trio of simple black Egyptian icons, as a kid I was bonkers for Egyptology & never grew tired of the imagery. I still recall the exact outfit that I was wearing while getting those tattoos. They are not my favorite any longer, but I do not regret them... not one teeny bit. Then there is my knuckle tattoos! I am fascinated with font & typography in general. I could spend days searching & playing on font websites. So naturally I am obsessed with words on skin. You can expect to see more words tattooed into my flesh.

Do you have a favorite tattoo? I couldn't choose a favorite tattoo. I imagine it would be like asking a parent which child is their favorite. I do know that I am still super smitten with my knuckle tattoos. They make me smile everyday.

Saturday Ink! The First Edition

Good morning kittens! Welcome to the very first "Saturday Ink" post, I am so excited and so very glad you are here! Check back each Saturday to meet a new blogger, see their ink, and listen to their unique tattoo stories. And on that note, we cue the music:

First blogger up to bat is the oh so lovely Mz Haley!

Where did you get your ink done? I got my tattoo done at Hearts of Fire Tattoos in Springfield by Wayne! He was super nice about my first-time tattoo jitters, even though the tattoo took a huge total of 7 minutes to complete. :)

Is there a story to this tattoo, or special reason that you got it? This tattoo is special to me because I love the handmade world so much. It's been a big part of the majority of my life, and I would love for it to be my career someday. I'm very big into sewing so of course, I got a stitched heart with the needle and thread coming from it. I went back and forth for forever trying decide if I wanted this tattoo, or an owl, drawn by my friend Janel. I finally decided on the heart, and sometimes when I tell people I almost got an owl, I always add, "but I didn't think I'd want an owl on me forever." To which they reply "and you think you'll want a heart on your wrist forever?" The stitched heart means a lot more to me than the average person, so yes, I do want it on my wrist forever!

Do you have plans for anymore? I do! The week after I got my tattoo done, I already had my next 3 planned out in my head. Next month, I'll be getting my second tattoo, a bow on the back of my neck, with my best friend, Cassie. After that, I want a dream catcher to honor my Native American heritage, and sometime I definitely want to get my knuckles tattooed, but I'll save that for after I'm married and I know for sure what my career is! :)
